The technique...

Since completing her artistic studies in 1997, Shazia Mahmood has devoted her time to the exploration of a very specific and quite unique method of painting. Her process-based technique relies on the phenomenon of chromatography - the colour-seperation reaction that occurs when two specific mediums interact. In Shazia's work the base medium is a layer of PVA glue on canvas. When inks are then applied the glue draws out the individual dyes to create a distinctive colour transition.

After eight years of experimentation Shazia's intimate knowledge of the technique allows her to control the progress of each reaction to produce her desired visual result. Although this process is most immediately recognizeable in Shazia's Abstract works, it is also the basis of her Landscape pieces. The chromatographic technique lends these pieces - inspired by the rugged West Scottish coastline - an evocotive, mysterious air that can't be matched by traditional methods. Read what Shazia herself has to say about her own work.
